Τη δεκαετία του ’70, λεσβίες από όλο τον κόσμο καταφθάνουν σε ένα μικρό χωριό της Λέσβου. Καθώς οι εντάσεις με τους κατοίκους αυξάνονται, η σκηνοθέτρια Τζέλη Χατζηδημητρίου –που βρέθηκε στη μέση ως ντόπια και ως λεσβία– αφηγείται μια ιστορία 40 και πλέον χρόνων για την αγάπη, την κοινότητα, τις συγκρούσεις, αλλά και για το τι σημαίνει να αισθάνεται κανείς αποδεκτός.

Since the 1970s, lesbians from around the world would flock to a small village on the Greek island of Lesvos. As tensions between the newly-arrived lesbians and local residents rose, Tzeli Hadjidimitriou –caught in the middle as a local and lesbian herself– chronicled 40+ years of love, community, conflict, and what it means to feel accepted.

Η Δημοκρατία των Λεσβιών & των Φίλων τους τους είναι μια πρωτοβουλία που ξεκίνησε το 2022 με αφορμή την απογοήτευση με την απουσία λεσβιακών και φεμινιστικών
αναπαραστάσεων, λόγων και κινημάτων στο βαθιά συντηρητικό πλαίσιο της Κύπρου.
Στόχος μας είναι η δημιουργία χώρου για τις πολυκοινοτικές εμπειρίες και εκφράσεις των
κουήρ γυναικών του νησιού και η παρουσίαση του καλλιτεχνικού και ακτιβιστικού τους
έργου. Διοργανώνεται από τις Νταϊάνα Γεωργίου, Ναταλία Δαμίγου-Παπώτη και Μιχάλη
Ιντζιέγιαννη.

The Republic of Lesbians & Their Friends is an initiative born in 2022 out of a frustration
with the absence of lesbian and feminist representations, discourses and movements in the
deeply conservative context of Cyprus. We aim to create space for the multicommunal
experiences and expressions of the queer women of the island and to showcase their artistic
and activist work. Organised by Diana Georgiou, Natalia Damigou-Papoti, and Mihali Intzieyanni.
