Το We Come as Friends είναι μια σύγχρονη Οδύσσεια, ένα ταξίδι στην καρδιά της Αφρικής που θυμίζει επιστημονική φαντασία. Τη στιγμή που το Σουδάν, η μεγαλύτερη αφρικανική χώρα, διαιρείται σε δύο κράτη, κάνει και πάλι την εμφάνισή της η παλιά μάστιγα του «εκπολιτισμού», της αποικιοκρατίας, της σύγκρουσης αυτοκρατοριών, μαζί με νέα επεισόδια αιματηρών (και ιερών) πολέμων για γη και πηγές πλούτου. Ο σκηνοθέτης της πολυσυζητημένης ταινίας Darwin's Nightmare μας ταξιδεύει με την αυτοσχέδια του ιπτάμενη μηχανή από τενεκέ και καραβόπανο, και μας μεταφέρει στα πιο απίστευτα μέρη, στις σκέψεις και στα όνειρα των ανθρώπων, με τρόπο εντυπωσιακό. Σε αυτό το ντοκιμαντέρ, Κινέζοι εργάτες πετρελαϊκών εταιριών, ειρηνευτές του ΟΗΕ, Σουδανοί πολέμαρχοι και Αμερικανοί Ευαγγελιστές προσπαθούν να δημιουργήσουν κοινό έδαφος.

We Come as Friends is a modern odyssey, a dizzying, science fiction-like journey into the heart of Africa. At the moment when the Sudan, the continent’s biggest country, is being divided into two nations, an old ‘civilizing’ pathology re-emerges - that of colonialism, clash of empires, and yet new episodes of bloody (and holy) wars over land and resources. The director of the celebrated Darwin's Nightmare takes us on this voyage in his tiny, self-made flying machine out of tin and canvas, he leads us into most improbable locations and into people’s thoughts and dreams, in both stunning and heartbreaking ways. Chinese oil workers, UN peacekeepers, Sudanese warlords, and American evangelists ironically weave common ground in this documentary.
